It is round and often slightly edged with a smooth, leathery skin of an orange yellow to dark red in color when ripe. The interior is separated by membranous walls and white, spongy and bitter tissues into compartments packed with sacs, filled with sweetly acid, juicy, red, pink or whitish
pulp. The seeds, juice and pulp are eaten, but the yellowish membrane is too astringent.
